A low, wide bookcase for a long wall
This open storage unit is 1,200 mm wide and 900 mm tall. 2 shelves make 3 openings. With the atlas settings, the optimizer uses 1 sheet. The cut list and the model are below.

The piece
The frame has two sides, a top, a bottom and two shelves. The 400 mm depth takes boxes, binders and books. It has no back, doors or plinth, so the shelf spacing stays visible from both sides.
The model uses a 1200 mm wide cabinet shell and a two-shelf pattern. The boards are 18 mm plywood. The top and bottom sit between the sides, so the clear width inside is 1164 mm.
The low-height constraint
The unit is 900 mm tall. It is low storage, not a seat. The atlas measures sheet use, not seating loads, and this model has not been tested as a bench.
With 2 shelves the optimizer uses 1 sheet. With 3 shelves it uses 2 sheets in the atlas. The footprint does not change; the extra shelf is the measured threshold.
The 3 openings are 276 mm clear. Measure the boxes, binders and books you plan to store. The top is a shelf surface, not a worktop with a load rating.
- Width: 1,200 mm outside; 1,164 mm clear between the sides.
- Height: 900 mm outside; 3 clear openings of 276 mm.
- Depth: 400 mm; check the depth of your boxes and binders.
- Sheet use: 1 sheet with 2 shelves; 2 sheets with 3 shelves.
The measured cut list
6 boards. Sizes are the finished board sizes from the model. All boards are 18 mm plywood. The atlas uses a 3 mm kerf, 5 mm edge trim and grain along the long edge; no part is rotated.
| Part | Qty | Length | Width | Thickness |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Left side | 1 | 900 | 400 | 18 |
| Right side | 1 | 900 | 400 | 18 |
| Top | 1 | 1,164 | 400 | 18 |
| Bottom | 1 | 1,164 | 400 | 18 |
| Shelf 1 | 1 | 1,164 | 400 | 18 |
| Shelf 2 | 1 | 1,164 | 400 | 18 |
The cutting plan
The optimizer uses 1 sheet with these settings, 13.2% waste and 9 cuts. The first sheet is below. The app shows every sheet and the numbered cut order.
Before you cut
Do not use this unit as a seat. The atlas does not test seating loads. Use a bench that is designed and tested for that purpose.
Check the floor, the wall and the box sizes. A low unit can still tip if it is pushed; fix it to the wall if the location allows it.
Set the real sheet size, thickness and kerf in the app before you buy material. The atlas result uses a 2440 × 1220 mm sheet, a 3 mm kerf and 5 mm edge trim.
The open frame has no back. A back adds a board and changes the cut list; the atlas measures the open version only.
Frequently asked questions
Can I sit on it?
No. The atlas measures sheet use, not seating. Use a bench that is designed and tested for that load.
Why does one more shelf need another sheet?
With 2 shelves 6 boards fit 1 sheet. With 3 shelves 7 boards need 2 sheets. The threshold table shows the same change for other footprints.
Will storage boxes fit?
The clear opening is 276 mm high and 1,164 mm wide. Measure your boxes, including any lid or handle.
