Which bookcase still fits one sheet?

This atlas measures one open bookcase family on a 2440 × 1220 mm sheet. Choose a width, height, depth and shelf count. The numbers come from the app’s model evaluator and guillotine optimizer.

Every case uses 18 mm plywood, a 2440 × 1220 mm sheet, a 3 mm kerf and 5 mm edge trim. Grain runs along the long edge and no part is rotated.

What the atlas measures

Each case is one open bookcase: two sides, a top, a bottom and 2–4 shelves. There is no back, door or plinth. The model uses the same cabinet shell and shelf pattern features as the app catalogue.

The grid is 3 widths × 3 heights × 3 depths × 3 shelf counts: 81 cases. Every combination is evaluated and optimised. The page does not interpolate between them.

The app turns the model boards into parts and runs its guillotine optimizer. The cut list, sheets, waste and cuts in each row are the result of that run.

The fixed sheet and cut settings

A cutting result is only valid for specific settings. These are the atlas settings:

  • Sheet: 2440 × 1220 mm. The 5 mm edge trim leaves 2430 × 1210 mm usable.
  • Material: 18 mm plywood. Every board in the model has the same thickness and material.
  • Kerf: 3 mm on every cut.
  • Grain: each board’s grain runs along its long edge. The sheet grain is horizontal and no part is rotated.
  • Cuts: guillotine only, side to side. The priority is balanced: fewest sheets first, then least waste.
  • Stored result: the project carries the model, parts, stock and optimizer result. On import, the app checks that the model revision matches.

A different sheet, thickness, kerf or grain rule can change the layout. The atlas does not promise a minimum for those settings.

Where one sheet ends

A threshold in this table is a measured change: the same footprint, one more shelf and one more sheet. It is not a minimum for every possible layout.

  • 1,200 × 900 × 400 mm: 2 shelves → 1 sheet; 3 shelves → 2 sheets.
  • 900 × 900 × 320 mm: 2 shelves → 1 sheet; 3 shelves → 2 sheets.
  • 900 × 1,500 × 320 mm: 2 shelves → 1 sheet; 3 shelves → 2 sheets.
Measured changes: the same footprint, one more shelf and one more sheet.

How to read a case

Every row in the table and every case panel uses the same five figures:

  • Parts: the total number of boards the model generates.
  • Sheets: the sheets the optimizer uses with these settings. A small case can use one sheet and still leave much of it unused.
  • Waste: unused area on the sheets the optimizer uses. Waste includes the kerf, the edge trim and unused areas; it may leave several remnants, and not every one is usable.
  • Cuts: the number of guillotine passes in the result.
  • One sheet?: yes or no. It is the result for these settings, not a guarantee for another size.
  • Open model: opens the exact project in the app as a new local project. The current project is saved first.

What the atlas does not say

The atlas measures sheet use. It is not a structural plan and it does not promise a price.

  • It does not give a minimum sheet count for every possible layout. It gives one optimizer result for fixed settings.
  • It does not test loads, shelf stiffness or safe seating. Check spans, joints and fixings with a competent builder.
  • It does not measure sizes outside the grid. The app can model another size, but this page’s figures do not apply to it.
  • It does not choose the cheapest material or supplier. Prices and availability change.
  • It does not include a back, doors, drawers or hardware. Each one adds parts and can change the sheet count.

Frequently asked questions

Why only 81 sizes?

The grid covers 3 widths × 3 heights × 3 depths × 3 shelf counts. It is small enough to measure every combination and broad enough to compare a narrow, a low and a tall bookcase. It is not a catalogue of every possible size.

Do these numbers apply to another sheet or saw?

No. The atlas uses a 2440 × 1220 mm sheet, 18 mm plywood, a 3 mm kerf and 5 mm edge trim. Change the sheet, thickness or blade and optimize again in the app.

Is one sheet always enough?

No. The table shows both one-sheet and two-sheet cases. The result depends on the size, the shelf count and the fixed settings.

Can I change the size?

Yes. Open a case in the app and change the width, height or depth in the modeler. The model is editable; the cut list and cutting plan are generated again. The atlas does not measure the new size.

Is this a structural plan?

No. The atlas measures parts and sheets. It is not a load test or a shelf-stiffness guarantee. Check the joints, shelf spans and wall fixing before cutting.
