A 600 mm bookcase for a narrow wall

This open bookcase is 600 mm wide and 1,900 mm tall. It has 3 shelves and 4 clear openings. With the atlas settings, the optimizer uses 2 sheets. The cut list and the model are below.

The piece

The frame has two sides, a top, a bottom and three shelves. It has no back, doors or plinth. The 320 mm depth keeps the unit close to the wall, and the open sides make it easy to see the shelf spacing before you cut.

The model uses a 600 mm wide cabinet shell and a three-shelf pattern. The boards are 18 mm plywood. The top and bottom sit between the sides, so the clear width inside is 564 mm.

The narrow constraint

The frame is 600 mm wide. The clear width between the sides is 564 mm. Measure the books and objects that must stand in each opening, including the space your hand needs to lift them out.

The frame is 1,900 mm tall. That is the part that changes the sheet use: the same 600 × 1,900 × 320 mm frame with 2 shelves uses 1 sheet in the atlas. With 3 shelves it uses 2 sheets. The extra shelf is the measured threshold, not a change in width or depth.

A tall, open unit must be fixed to the wall. The model does not choose a fixing. Check the wall material, the skirting and the height of the top shelf before you drill.

  • Width: 600 mm outside; 564 mm clear between the sides.
  • Height: 1,900 mm outside; 4 clear openings of 452.5 mm between the shelf faces.
  • Depth: 320 mm. Check the depth of the books and objects you will put in it.
  • Sheet use: 2 sheets with 3 shelves; 1 sheet with 2 shelves.

The measured cut list

7 boards. Sizes are the finished board sizes from the model. All boards are 18 mm plywood. The atlas uses a 3 mm kerf, 5 mm edge trim and grain along the long edge; no part is rotated.

The cutting plan

The optimizer uses 2 sheets with these settings, 64.4% waste and 10 cuts. Sheet 1 is below. The app shows both sheets and the numbered cut order.

Before you cut

Check the wall fixing and the skirting first. A 1,900 mm open frame is tall; the model has no anti-tip device and no back.

Check the shelf span and the joints. This page measures sheet use, not structural strength. It is not a load rating.

Set the real sheet size, thickness and kerf in the app before you buy material. The atlas result uses a 2440 × 1220 mm sheet, a 3 mm kerf and 5 mm edge trim.

The open frame has no back. A back is a separate board and changes the cut list; the atlas does not measure that version.

Frequently asked questions

Does 600 mm leave room for books?

The clear width is 564 mm. Measure the books and any object that must stand beside them. A wide book can be taller than the 452.5 mm clear opening; measure both directions.

Why does it need 2 sheets?

The extra shelf adds boards. The same frame with 2 shelves uses 1 sheet in this atlas; with 3 shelves it uses 2 sheets. The table shows other thresholds.

Can I make it lower?

The app can. The atlas measures 900, 1500 and 1900 mm heights for this width and depth. Other heights are not measured on this page.
